When I first started mobile ECU remapping, one of my biggest worries wasn’t programming the ECU—it was arriving at a vehicle I’d never worked on before.
Simple things such as finding the bonnet release, locating the OBD socket, identifying the battery connection points or working out where the ECU was fitted could take longer than they should. When a customer is watching, or a garage has trusted you with their vehicle, those moments can quickly knock your confidence.
After working on thousands of vehicles, I realised this is something almost every new mobile remapper experiences. That’s why I created The Mobile Tuner’s Field Guide—a growing library designed to help new and developing tuners arrive prepared and work with confidence.
Rather than relying purely on workshop manuals or internet searches, the training is built around real vehicles we’ve personally worked on. Every experienced mobile remapper remembers the first time they arrived at a vehicle they’d never worked on before.
Where’s the bonnet release? Where’s the OBD socket? Where’s the battery? Is this vehicle programmed via OBD, Bench or Boot? Where is the ECU actually fitted?
These aren’t complicated questions, but standing on a customer’s driveway trying to find the basics can quickly damage your confidence. The same applies when working for trade customers, where appearing organised and professional is just as important as carrying out the programming itself.
